Specifications for Outlook

As of Outlook 2007, the change of the rendering engine from Internet Explorer to Word 2007 also resulted in changes for mailings regarding the use of HTML/CSS content.

The following must therefore be taken into account for Outlook:

  • Reference all styles inline
  • do not use div positionings, please use tables
  • Always define tables, e.g. <table width="600" border="0"cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
    • "px" is not permitted in "width="... and "height="...“
    • define align and valign in each column
    • "style" each column containing text – e.g. <td style="font-family: verdana;font-size:11px;color:#000000">text text text</td>
    • Reference font colours hexa-decimally, no short form.
  • Empty table cells with a height less than 20 must be defined as follows: <td width="13"height="10" style=“font-size:10px;line-height:10px;“></td>
  • Background images should not be used
    • If background images are used, a bgcolor to serve as a replacement must be additionally defined
    • Caution: The font colour may not be identical to the bgcolor
  • background-repeat is not permitted
  • Forms should not be used
  • Frames should not be used
  • Paddings should always be written out: padding-left, padding-right, padding-top, padding-bottom
  • Do not use margins
  • Do not use JavaScript

Recommendations / notes:

  • Use <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
  • Always reference linked images with border="0"
  • Include display:block with each image: <img src="IMAGE PATH" border=“0“ style=“display:block;“ />
  • Animated gif-images: Please note that in some clients, only the first frame is displayed
  • Images should include alt-attributes to define an alternative text if the graphics are not downloaded
  • images no larger than 150 KB
  • If possible, images should include the width="..: und height=“..“ dimensions
  • "px" are not permitted as an additional entry in HTML tags such as width=“..“
  • Area maps – permitted, but not recommended
  • Font family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, Times New Roman – recommended

To reduce the spam value:

  • The title in the html-Header <title>xxx</title> should be no longer than 25 chars.
  • Do not use font sizes of 0 and larger than 18 (e.g.: font-size: 0px).
  • Observe UPPER and lower case when using graphics (image names are case sensitive)

Responsive Design

Some Android smart phones and third party apps (e.g. Gmail app) do not fully support the CSS3 media queries necessary for the implementation of responsive design in newsletters.

For Retina displays, we recommend integrating all graphics (especially icons) in double resolution.

For Responsive Design, the following specifications should be included in the code:

  • <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1, user-scalable=0" />
  • <meta name="format-detection" content="telephone=no">
  • <meta name="x-apple-disable-message-reformatting">

General styles

In order to ensure an optimal display, we recommend integrating (if not already present) the following CSS specifications in <head>:

<style type="text/css">

ReadMsgBody {width: 100%;}.ExternalClass {width: 100%;}.ExternalClass, .ExternalClass p, .ExternalClass span, .ExternalClass font, .ExternalClass td, .ExternalClass div {line-height: normal;}body {-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;margin: 0 !important;padding: 0 !important;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;}p {margin: 1em 0;}BODY:link {colour: #333333 !important;text-decoration: underline !important;}a[x-apple-data-detectors] {colour: inherit !important;text-decoration: none !important;font-size: inherit !important;font-family: inherit !important;font-weight: inherit !important;line-height: inherit !important;}table td {border-collapse: collapse;mso-table-lspace: 0pt;mso-table-rspace: 0pt;}img {outline: 0;-ms-interpolation-mode: bicubic;}a img {border: none;}p {margin: 1em 0;}div, button {display:block !important;}

</style>

Animated GIFs

Animated GIFs can be integrated like any other image. However, certain clients do not support their use. In these clients, the first image of the GIF sequence is displayed. The first image of the GIF sequence should therefore be relatable to the overall presentation of the newsletter.
